The first phone book

The first phone book wasn’t a book.  In 1878 the New Haven, Connecticut, telephone company published a one-page list of all its subscribers:   http://www.oldtelephonebooks.com/pages/first_phone_book.  Subscribers had no phone numbers, since all calls went through a human operator at the telephone exchange.  Hat tip: reason.com.
