Reading 1 Enoch

Today I started reading 1 Enoch, a Jewish apocalyptic book from between the times of the Old and New Testaments. It has come out in a very readable yet scholarly English translation based on the translation in the Hermeneia Commentary volumes dedicated to Enoch.

Much of 1 Enoch sounds familiar to anyone who’s read the biblical books of Daniel and Revelation, and the other apocalyptic sections of the Bible. Some of it is just strange. My personal favorite: the fallen angels taught humankind all kinds of evils, including the use of cosmetics. Take that, Maybelline!

I liked chapter 85 and following, the alternate history of Israel where everyone is a cow (or sheep) instead of human.
